Pets on your wedding day??
For many couples, pets are more than just animals—they’re family. Including your furry (or feathered) friend in your wedding or engagement shoot is a wonderful way to celebrate their place in your love story. We are animal lovers through and through, and we love when we get to include some fluffy smiles on a wedding our engagement day! Here’s how to make the experience smooth, stress-free, and fun for everyone involved.
1. Consider Your Pet’s Personality
Before making any decisions, think about your pet’s temperament. Some pets love attention and social settings, while others may feel anxious around crowds. If your pet is easily startled or nervous, a large wedding might not be ideal, but they can still be part of the day in quieter moments. Consider including them in an intimate engagement shoot or having a dedicated space where they can feel safe and comfortable.
2. Choose a Pet-Friendly Venue
Not all venues allow animals, so check ahead of time if your wedding or engagement location is pet-friendly. Outdoor venues, parks, and private estates are often more accommodating than traditional indoor locations. If your dream venue doesn’t allow pets, consider incorporating them into a pre-wedding shoot in a location that does. Always ask about pet policies, restrictions, and any additional fees involved to avoid last-minute surprises.
3. Assign a Pet Wrangler
Having a trusted friend, family member, or even a professional pet sitter available to handle your pet can help reduce stress. They can bring your pet in for key moments and take care of them when they’re not needed. This ensures that your pet stays safe, follows the plan, and doesn’t disrupt the flow of your wedding day. Be sure to provide them with supplies like food, water, and toys to keep your pet comfortable throughout the event.
4. Dress Them Up (Comfortably!)
A cute bowtie, floral collar, or custom bandana can make your pet look wedding-ready. However, it’s important to ensure their outfit is comfortable, fits properly, and doesn’t restrict movement. Avoid anything that might cause discomfort, like tight clothing or accessories that dangle and could be chewed on. Do a trial run with the outfit before the big day to ensure your pet is happy wearing it.
5. Practice Before the Big Day
If your pet isn’t used to crowds, loud sounds, or cameras, do some trial runs. Bring them to the venue, let them interact with people, and practice any special moments (like walking down the aisle). Introduce them to any props or accessories they’ll be using, such as a leash, flower crown, or ring pouch. Repetition and positive reinforcement will help them feel more comfortable and confident when the big day arrives.
6. Incorporate Them into the Ceremony or Photos
Your pet can play a role in many ways:
Ring Bearer or Flower Pup – Have them walk down the aisle with a designated handler. Train them beforehand so they feel comfortable walking in front of a crowd.
Pre-Wedding Portraits – Include them in couple portraits or family photos before the ceremony. This way, you capture special moments without worrying about their energy levels later.
Engagement Photoshoot Star – Capture moments of you and your pet enjoying your favorite activities together, whether it’s playing in a field or cuddling on the couch.
Cake Topper or Custom Decor – If having them physically present isn’t an option, feature them on invitations, cake toppers, or signage for a special touch.
7. Be Prepared for the Unexpected
Pets can be unpredictable, so expect a few surprises. Bring treats, toys, water, and cleanup supplies to handle any accidents or distractions. Have a quiet area or crate where they can rest if they become overwhelmed. Make sure you have a backup plan in case your pet becomes restless or needs a break during key moments. Most importantly, stay flexible and enjoy the candid, unscripted moments they bring to the day!
8. Capture the Memories
Make sure your photographer is comfortable working with animals and has experience capturing their best angles. Pets don’t always pose on command, so a patient photographer who can work with movement and distractions is key. Provide treats or favorite toys to keep your pet engaged and looking toward the camera. Some of the most beautiful shots will come from natural interactions, so focus on having fun and letting your pet’s personality shine.
9. Engagement Shoot
If all else fails, an engagement shoot with your pet is the perfect way to include them on your wedding journey. A beautiful location where your pet can run around and have a great time is the perfect idea to keep them engaged and to get fun and candid photos of you interacting with them. Bringing a friend can be helpful to help when we want some photos without our furry friend, OR if you book with us we are usually both there with you and are happy to give attention to your pets!
Final Thoughts
Including your pet in your wedding or engagement shoot adds a special, personal touch to your celebration. With a little planning, you can create heartwarming memories with your furry friend that you’ll cherish forever. Whether they’re walking down the aisle or simply being part of your photos, their presence will make your special day even more meaningful.
