Top 4 Tips to Find the Perfect Wedding Photographer
If you’ve stumbled across this post, it means you are likely in the market for a wedding photographer; that or you just love reading wedding related material. Either way, we are here to help! Finding a wedding photographer can be a lengthy and confusing process. Countless options, vibes, style, packages, price; these are just some of the factors to consider when making the right pick! This becomes extra important when you consider the photographer / videographer will be the vendor you spend the most time with on the wedding day-you want to make sure you enjoy being around them!
Here are our tips to select the wedding photographer that will be the best fit for you!
Tip 1: Style Check
Every photographer has a different and unique editing and shooting style; bright and airy, moody, cinematic, natural…Posed, unposed, editorial, candid. These are some of the different styles that are out there in the wedding photography business and they are all very different from each other! Different styles will resonate with different people and because photos are a visual medium it’s obviously important that you like the style of whatever photographer you’re booking.
We liken this process to booking a tattoo. The first step is to find an artist who’s style you love, and then dive in further to see their portfolio. We don’t mind when potential clients ask to view an entire wedding gallery. It can be a great way to see how your wedding might look in that particular photographer’s style! Plus, if you like the style of a particular photographer and their work is consistent, there is a higher chance you will like the photos that you get back of your big day!
Tip 2: Vibe Check
The most important thing, in our opinion, is the vibe. As mentioned above, the photographer is the vendor that you will spend more time with than anyone else on your wedding day. They will be there from start to finish, capturing the getting ready photos, dancing, and everything in between. You need to make sure you enjoy them and that they match your energy and bring that to your wedding day! You can check reviews, social media posts, and website to get a picture of the people you’re considering, and then schedule a meeting to chat further! There is no substitute for a good conversation :)
We prioritize the vibe and consider ourselves to be chameleons that can change it up depending on the group. Every wedding is a little different, and while all of our couples have a lot of similarities, the little differences require flexibility. We approach each day as a unique story, bring calm and easy going vibes to the wedding day, and try to be as stress free and positive vibes as possible!
Tip 3: Budget Check
A huge factor in which photographer you choose is the budget. Let’s be honest, money is a big part of a wedding and it can be super stressful when considering what to allocate budget to. We are obviously biased, but we always suggest not skimping out on a good photographer. This doesn’t mean just simple hire the most expensive photographer, but it does mean to be real with expectations. Having an experienced photographer will allow you to save money on other things because they will know how to work angles and lighting to make everything look as good as possible!
Tip 4: Schedule an Engagement Shoot
If you’re still unsure after meeting with your photographer of choice, engagement shoots can be a super fun way to work with a photographer and also get to know them better at the same time; it’s like a test run for the wedding day. The stakes are a lot lower with an engagement shoot and it can be relaxed as you want it to be. Best case scenario, you have a great time and end up choosing that photographer. Worst case you save some money by weeding out a photographer that you didn’t particularly vibe well with. Either way you will end up with some beautiful photos and have a clearer decision on who to book!
In all of our photography packages we include an engagement session for free, AND if couples book an engagement shoot on it’s own and book us for the wedding, the cost of the engagement shoot comes off the cost of our wedding packages! We LOVE spending time with our couples. The more time we can spend with them before the wedding day the better! When a photographer comes to your wedding day you want to feel fully comfortable with them and have a safe space so you can be your most authentic selves!
